The founder
Chamath Palihapitiya needs little introduction: former Facebook executive, founder of Social Capital, and one of the hosts of the All-In podcast. He started 8090 in January 2024 as a self-funded incubator for enterprise software startups — an unusual structure that let the company iterate on ideas before committing to one. In 2026 he stepped into the CEO seat himself, his first full-time operating role since leaving Facebook, to lead the company’s push behind its flagship product.
What 8090 does
8090’s product, Software Factory, is built around a specific bet: that enterprises in regulated industries won’t adopt AI coding tools that operate as black boxes. Instead of a developer chatting with an assistant in an IDE, Software Factory is a shared, governed workspace where business and technical teams describe intent in plain language and coordinate AI agents to produce production-ready code — with a complete audit trail of who (or what) changed what, and why. The pitch is “Quality. Control. Consistency,” aimed squarely at healthcare, financial services, manufacturing, and federal government customers who need to show compliance auditors exactly how a piece of software came to be, not just that it works.
The round
8090 raised a $135 million Series A led by Salesforce Ventures, with participation from WndrCo, Craft Ventures, The Production Board, and Launch, plus angel investors including Palo Alto Networks CEO Nikesh Arora and Quora CEO Adam D’Angelo. The round values a company that’s barely two years old but has already picked a narrow, defensible lane — regulated enterprises — rather than competing head-on with general-purpose AI coding assistants.
Why it matters for founders
8090 is a bet that the next wave of enterprise AI-coding adoption won’t be won by whoever ships the fastest autocomplete, but by whoever can convince a compliance officer that an AI agent’s output is auditable and controllable. For founders building dev tools aimed at regulated customers, or evaluating AI agents for anything touching production systems, 8090’s traction is a signal that “audit trail” and “human-in-the-loop control” are becoming table-stakes features, not nice-to-haves, once AI agents move from prototyping into production code.
